GENERAL OVERVIEW -
The Elling E4 is an amazing boat.
Safety rated category 'A', the Elling performs exactly as you'd expect a
boat of this type to do. In rough seas, she more cuts through the
waves than rolls. With a low centre of gravity she rolls
significantly less than others in her class. Her hull is made from a material called 'Twaron', claimed by Neptune to be a slightly stronger material than Kevlar, which means she is as impact resistant as you can get. |

POWER -
Jamyla is powered by a 440HP Yanmar engine,
which delivers between 6-18 knots fully loaded. Top speed,
unloaded has been recorded by Neptune at 21 knots, a speed we almost managed to
emulate in the Dutch canals on Jamyla's maiden voyage and before she was
full of all our necessary boating stuff. In practice now, she is
most comfortable at anything up to 15 knots - 12 knots if you're looking
to save fuel. The main engine is backed up by a 38hp 'wing' engine, again Yanmar, which surprisingly, delivers a speed of between 5 and 6 knots. As importantly, it has its own propeller, set away from the main propeller, a separate fuel supply, with a changeover valve to the main fuel supply. This means that, in an emergency Jamyla has more options than a standard 'twin-engined' boat and can, of course, go on for miles and miles.......... |

MANOEUVRABILITY
-
Jamyla is relatively easy to manoeuvre,
once you adjust to the fact that you don't have twin engines to help
you. She doesn't get blown about in the wind so much, so you have
more time to react. You've also got powerful bow and stern
thrusters, so final berthing is often done by drift mixed with the
thrusters and a little power as and when required.
The extent to which she stays steady can be seen every time we're waiting for a lock. Whereas the power boats are constantly using their thrusters and jockeying for positions, we're sat still in relative calm, usually sipping a cup of tea. |
LIVEABILITY - This is another area where the Elling E4 really excels. With near-silent, thermostatically controlled heating, the batteries keep all systems operational uninterrupted for about three days without any external power source. What the batteries can't power, is dealt with by a very quiet generator - it's virtually silent outside of the boat (it's the sound-proofing qualities of Twaron that does it), so the neighbours aren't disturbed. Unlike most, if not all, power/sail boats, the bathrooms are fully heated and the kitchen/galley is of the size and with the facilities that you'd expect at home, including a full size fridge/freezer, dishwasher, oven, hob and microwave and clothes washer/drier. |
|
| RELIABILITY & AFTER SALES - Jamyla is the most reliable boat that we, or anybody else we know, have ever owned. In fairness, we have only owned 3 boats, the Elling and before that a Sealine S43 and a canal boat! But compared to Sealine, both Q Marine (UK) and Neptune (Holland) provide far superior After Sales service. There are only two other owners whom we know can and do speak in similar terms - one owns a Hardy and the other, a Broom. Judging by the repeat business that we see happening, other Elling owners must be having a similar experience. |
